Port configuration is one of the most critical yet frequently misunderstood aspects of manifold specification. Incorrect port sizing, incompatible thread types, or inadequate station spacing can derail an otherwise well-designed system. This guide provides a practical framework for port selection.

Understanding Port Sizing:

Port sizes follow standardized pipe thread dimensions, typically National Pipe Thread (NPT) in North America, BSPP (parallel) in Europe, or PT (tapered) in Asian markets. When selecting port size, consider:

  • Flow requirements: Larger ports reduce pressure drop but increase manifold footprint

  • Fitting availability: Standard sizes (1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2") offer the widest component selection

  • System pressure: Higher pressures may require larger thread engagement for reliability

Thread Type Compatibility:

Never mix thread standards. NPT (60° taper) and PT/Rc (55° taper) may appear similar but will leak when forced together.BSPP (G) requires O-ring sealing rather than thread sealant.

Station Spacing Considerations:

Spacing between manifold outlets is one of the most commonly forgotten selection elements. Inadequate spacing prevents proper tool access and may cause neighboring components to interfere.

Minimum spacing guidelines:

  • 1/8" ports: 0.75" - 1.0" center-to-center

  • 1/4" ports: 1.0" - 1.25" center-to-center

  • 3/8" ports: 1.25" - 1.5" center-to-center

  • 1/2" ports: 1.5" - 2.0" center-to-center

Always verify with actual valve or fitting dimensions before finalizing port layout.

How Many Stations Do You Need?

Standard manifolds typically offer 2-10 stations, though custom configurations can extend to 20 or more stations. For applications requiring more than 10 stations, consider:

  • Dual-end supply: Feed air from both ends to maintain pressure at mid-manifold stations

  • Blanking plates: Specify additional stations beyond current needs for future expansion-
